What is a chord progression

A chord progression is an organised chord sequence that directs the harmonic motion of a piece. A Roman numeral identifies the scale degree of the root: I is tonic, IV subdominant, and V dominant. Letter case and added symbols show chord quality: I is major, vi minor, and vii° diminished.

Roman-numeral notation makes one scheme recognisable in different keys and simplifies transposition and voice-leading comparison. The catalog covers cyclic pop patterns, the blues form, jazz ii–V–I, and other models. Compare their endings with cadences and their pitch collections with scales.
